Hi everybody,

Some of us tried the ice of the oval in Red Deer last night and it's in a good shape and really smooth already.

A reason to sharpen your skates and try it out

Monday December 19 we're starting with the club skating.
As usual from 7:30 pm. until around 9:00 pm.
Mondays and Wednesdays.

If you don't have skates, there are skates available you can rent.
Just arrived from Holland: a couple of new and a few slightly used skates.

Our most experienced skaters will be there to help and coach you if you wish.

It appears the snow is here to stay and the trails are groomed and in decent shape although you could appeal to the snow gods for more. For anyone who is interested, we are going to start skiing Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons. Anyone is welcome, we will focus on classic style skiing in preparation for the Birkie but skate skiers will be "tolerated".

Tuesdays 6:30 will start from the picnic shelter at Great Chief Park, opposite the parking lot for the Red Deer Golf and Country Club, for a 1 hour(ish) ski. From the responses I received earlier, Tuesdays were the best weeknight and immediately after work for some individuals; so we will just stick with the regular Tuesday race day and time. We will presumably stay at this location for the balance of the winter for the Tuesday nights. Bring a headlamp, if you have one, but I have rarely found them necessary. Yesterday there was a large group from the nordic ski club out and the headlamp was as much so they could see me as well as me seeing the trail.

Sundays - 1:00 @ Hertitage Ranch for a 2 hour ski. We can change the time depending on your feedback and switch it up to Riverbend if/when the snow improves. We can have coffee/meals after the ski at both locations. I would like to try to offer some waxing and ski technique/training demo's if I can convince someone like Andy Lamb or Suzanne to volunteer.

The closest loppets to enter are Camrose Jan 21, Red Deer Feb 4, Birke Feb 11, Kananskis Feb 25, and Lake Louise March 4. All are classic except Red Deer.

This weekend Marie and I will be in the mountains if anyone would like to join us for a ski. We plan to ski at Lake Louise Saturday and Peter Lougheed Sunday. Start skiing both days at 11:00AM, Saturday from the east end of the main parking lot at the top of Lake Louise for a 10k ski. Sunday we will start from Boulton Bridge for a 2 hour ski up to Elk Pass. We are staying at the Rocky Mountain Ski Lodge Saturday night.

A number of people have mentioned some interest in doing some cross country skiing this winter as cross training. We had discussed picking one night during the week and a day on the weekend. If you are interested and want a goal the Candian Birkbeiner is the largest ski loppet (citizen race) and relatively close - east of Sherwood Park. If you are really into it there is a whole series of loppets and Alberta Cup races. My favorite, for obvious reasons, is the Cookie Race in the Kananaskis 2 weeks after the Birkie.

This is a reminder that the RDABC is going to have its first general meeting under its new status as a registered society, and we would like you to join us. The meeting will be Wednesday, October 5 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Kerry Wood Nature Center.

The purpose of the meeting is to explain exactly what we are advocating to the city in terms of bike lanes, and to get feedback from you as to what you would like to see. You have supported us in our endeavors to get City Council to consider bike lanes, and this is your opportunity to explain to us your vision of bike lanes and your concerns about them. This is also your opportunity to get to know the members of the RDABC executive.

The morning after (i.e. Thursday morning) I will be meeting with the mayor so I would appreciate all of the feedback that you can give us before at the meeting.

This meeting is for members only. However, if you are not already a member, memberships will be on sale at the door for $5.00.

Just a last minute reminder about the bike ride tomorrow (Saturday.) We hope that you will arrive at the West Park Community Centre between 9:30 and 9:50 am to register, and also to buy a membership if you so wish. The Community Centre address is 3811-57 Ave. Head west from Taylor Drive up 43 St in the direction of Heritage Ranch until you get to 57 Ave. Turn south and head toward the strip mall. The Community Centre is on your left (east side) just before you get to the strip mall. You will recognize it by the tennis courts.

The ride starts at 10:00 am and we should arrive at Farmers’ Market by 10:30.

Hello Central Alberta Bicycle Club members,

I’m a member of the City or Red Deer’s Integrated Movement Study. The Integrated Movement Study is asking Red Deerians “What Moves You?”. The project is a review of our existing policies and procedures, our community’s attitudes and choices, and the best practices regarding the movement of people and goods in an urban environment. We will engage in shared learning opportunities to build an understanding of options for multi-modal movement that are true to our city and ensure well-informed and well-integrated land use and transportation planning decision making.

The learning opportunities include an ongoing speaker series with multiple events over the next year. These events will have renowned experts present on a variety of subjects related to transportation and placemaking. The speaker series events are also intended to engage attendants and provide Red Deerians the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, and present us their vision for the future of people & goods movement in Red Deer.

We are hoping to have a variety of citizens attend the spear series events in order to capture responses from a wide range of individuals and interest groups. I would like to invite all members of the Central Alberta Bicycle Club to attend the first speaker series event on September 22, 2011, 6:30-8:30 at Executive Place, 4900 – 50 Street. This first event will be in conjunction with the Walkability Roadshow and will focus on walking and making Red Deer more pedestrian friendly.

If you would like more information about the Integrated Movement Study, the Speakers Series, or the Walkability Roadshow, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at the contact information below. I have also attached a PDF that contains some information for the September 22, 2011 event. Lastly, could you please forward this information to anyone you believe may have an interest in attending.

Starting this thursday Sept.8 we will be doing some cyclocross training, racing at river bend golf course starting at 6. When the tuesday night races are over we will move it tuesday same time or earlier. We can park at the club house. We can practice mounting and dismounting the bike. Shoulder mounting the bike,carry the bike over barrier and jumping over the barriers.. I hope this time will work for everyone. If not maybe we can tweek the time. I hope to see lots of you out.

This year, our route will take us from Westpark Community Centre (3811-57 Ave) to the Red Deer Farmer’s Market. We are excited that our route will include one of Red Deer’s brand new pilot bicycle lanes.
RDABC Memberships will be available for $5.00 and the PCN will be supporting the event with healthy snacks. Riders of all ages are encouraged to come, so please try to bring out your friends and family.

Some Red Deer roads now have bike lanes painted on them. PLEASE make use of them.

This is a pilot project to measure their use and effectiveness.

We may be starting small, but it is a step in the right direction and one we can build on.

Saturday August 20th there will be a group ride from Banff to Lake Louise and back along the Bow Valley Parkway.
For those who have not done this before. It is a very scenic route with minimal traffic.
Round trip is 100km (110km if including the lake itself) We will stop for a food break at the lake Louise bakery prior to returning :)

Car pooling will leave Red Deer from the Capri at 08:00

There was a minor printing issue on the jerseys and for that reason the company is re-printing another set. This means there will be more jerseys made and will be available at a reduced price for those that would like an extra one.

Road Rage and the Cyclist.

What is it that the cyclist does that seems to antagonize the car or truck driver sitting in their safe steel environment that prompts them to drive as close as they can to the cyclist or honk their horn or step on the gas/diesel to create that big puff of black smoke as they go by? Do they even realize just how close they are and the effect it has on the rider?

It seems to me that just by being on our bikes on the road, we are somehow invading the drivers space, causing them some degree of irritation, inconveniencing them or bottom line, without knowing it, creating some degree of road rage in some drivers.

Today was an extreme example. A group of us were returning from a ride. We were on a wide shoulder of a two lane section (Hwy 11). We were not on the driving lane. A semi truck (tractor unit only) felt he should come as close as he could to our group. He had another clear lane where he could have moved over, but no.

This “near miss” or unnecessary encroachment into our space prompted one of the riders to “show a sign”.(wrong). The truck driver slammed on the brakes , we had to brake hard ourselves to avoid running into the back of him. He was out of his truck and it appeared, from his language and actions, that he was quite ready to “beat the crap out of us.” He even tried to grab one of the riders as he was getting out of his truck. Needless to say, for our own safety concerns, we did not stop.

This is in my opinion, (I hope) an extreme case and this individual, I think was “looking for a fight.” But, bottom line, the level of anger that he was directing towards a group of cyclist was very disturbing.

Cyclists, please ride with care, ride to the rules of the road, And try to avoid confrontation.

Drivers, please give us space. Space is our only protection, .

When passing a cyclist, go around them like you would any other vehicle. Leave lots of room. It gets real scary when a car or especially bigger vehicle comes too close.

When there is vehicle/cyclist contact, the cyclist loses every-time.

Think drivers. Give a cyclist 1 meter of space.

On May 7 from 10:00-2:00 we will be hosting an event to showcase the shop and provide a service to the community as well. Bring in your used bike to sell, trade, swap, give away. If you are looking for a bike this is the time to get it. Cost is $5 to enter the meet, which will include a quick assessment of the bike’s mechanical condition and potential value. Bikes that are not sold or traded will be advertised on the website but not stored. This is a good chance to buy a quality used bike with confidence and peace of mind. If you are planning to donate bikes to the sale please do so ahead of time so that they can be looked at and tuned beforehand. Also for sale will be the complete line of “Recycled Bikes” from the web site plus more that are not yet posted, so if you want one get it before the sale! Bikes can be dropped off starting at 9:00 the day of the sale. Following the sale we will head out on a leisurely cruise of the Red Deer trails so that you can enjoy your new ride. The Red Deer Runners have invited the CABC to a bike/ run/ bike, social/fun event.

To be held at the RiverBend Golf Course on Saturday June 4th at 09:00

Teams will be made up of a rider on a mountain bike and a runner.

There will be “eats” at the golf club house after the workout.

Volunteers needed

The Woody’s Marathon Committee is currently seeking volunteers to help out with their event on Sunday, May 22nd. Approximately 300 volunteers will be needed for both on and off the course. This includes race package pickup, directing runners en-route, serving food and refreshments or assisting runners at the finish line.

Sno Pitch Tournament

Sue and I are putting on a SNO pitch tournament to raise money for the "Ride to Conquer Cancer". We both need to raise $2500 each by the end of June, so we are pulling together this tournament on Saturday-April 16th.
It is coming together and I am recuiting teams....so, do you you think you can round up one?? from United Rentals or Bike Club. (see the attachements)...if you could post it at work I am sure you can find 10 people!>!>!> ? We would appreciate your help!.

It is only $30.00p.p for an excellent cause-- 3 -1hr games, steak standwich at East 40th and the money goes directly to AB Cancer research. East 40th will also have a band that night so the party continues....

Hi Folks,

Here is some news we wanted to share with you from the Central Alberta Bicycle Club.

The club is anticipating a big year this year with new members, new rides and the continuing goal of promoting cycling in central Alberta.

New Cycling Clothing.

Top of the list we have a new cycling kit. Please see the picture below.

In order to help you get the right size. A "FIT KIT" will be available at "WIpe-out Ski and Board" in Red Deer for the next two weeks. http://www.wipe-out.ca/

Please feel free to pop in and try on a jersey. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO OWN A KIT. We would like to think of this as a "Red Deer kit"

A full range of cycling clothing with be available such as, jerseys, jackets, shorts , skin-suits and tri-suits plus accessories.

Weekend Rides - Saturday and Sunday @ 09:30 From the Capri Hotel. (switching to 9:00 when the weather improves)

We would like to invite all cyclist to join our weekend group rides.

If you are new to cycling, training for your first triathlon, a junior or a master or just feel safer in a group. This is for you. We also have a Women's group.

New this year. Weekend rides will consist of a short loop, less than forty kilometres for those wanting to keep it short. Followed by additional milage, for those training up to 180km.!!

WE ALWAYS RIDE AS A GROUP AND NEVER LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND.

In conjunction with, Better Bicycle Commuting - Red Deer There will be some big community rides this year in the Spring and Fall. And a provincial category road race down town Red Deer next year.

Learn to ride clinics....

There will be clinics for mountain biking and for road riding, for those new to the sport. Covering riding techniques, pack riding, trail riding, bike maintenance and nutrition.

Mountain Bike Mondays.

Departing "Wipe-Out Ski and Bike" at 18:00 Monday evenings. For beginner to advanced from juniors to adults.

Tuesday night road racing.

From April to September we have a series of Road Races, Criterions and Time Trials. We group in to A,B,C,and D, categories. Each group will have an experienced rider to assist those new to road racing.

Training Camp.

Watch our website for dates for our spring training camp. This years camp will be at a "secret location" in British Columbia.

Mountain Fix.

We all need a trip to the mountains. We have organized group rides to mountainous places for both Road and Mountain biking, though out the summer.

"Share the road"

Campaign to make people in Central Alberta more aware of cycling and bikes. When gasoline hits $1.50/ litre. Bike commuting will probably become more popular.......

Central Alberta Bicycle Club has been around for over 30 years. We hope you come out and join us and share in our passion for cycling and biking.

Gravel Grinder and Brunch November 7th

Nick Friesen is to host the first annual "gravel grinder" and brunch.

The ride will be a 60-75km Cross Bike ride on the gravel roads around Red Deer.

DEPARTING the Capri at 9:45 on November 7th.

Followed by brunch at 1pm at the Friesen Home.

Everyone is invited, including those who just want to come for brunch.

Thank you to Nick, Sharon and Cecil for opening their home again for their annual brunch.

For those interested accommodation will be available at the "Hostel Bear" in Canmore for Saturday night, otherwise it is a day trip.

We meet on the north, bower ponds side, of Taylor Bridge @ 17:30

These rides will probably turn into night rides on mountain bikes as the days get shorter.
